President-elect Biden has emphasised the need to unite the United States. This is a good start: despite examples set by some nations’ premiers, good leadership does not include ‘divide and conquer’.
Unity sounds great – and many countries need it – but how far are you willing to go to get it? If we are to even come close to uniting, we need to understand the people who voted the other way from us.
What does this mean for leadership?
This same challenge exists in our own teams and organisations. There are people we don’t get on with, whose opinion we may even discount. Are we ready to take the time to understand their true position and their needs?
Curiosity means going to where people are, not expecting them to come to you.
