Last week, Squadify introduced us to Gareth, a one-of-a-kind rock star keeping his team in suspense with his mind-blowing, creative brilliance. Whilst it’s likely to remind many of us of similar stereotypes, the parody highlighted a serious challenge for leaders in today’s ‘Work From Anywhere’ environment: giving each team member a voice.
What does it mean for leadership?
Reed Hastings, Co-CEO of Netflix coined the famous phrase “Do not tolerate brilliant jerks. The cost to teamwork is too high.” Whilst the brilliance of an individual can be ‘inspirational’ and even seductive, it slowly haemorrhages the other team members’ contributions and dismantles collaboration and innovation. Both are vital in teams today.
Real inclusion and diversity take work but the result is the powerful voice of a rock star team.
