Speak with purpose, like a leader

If you clicked through for some tips on executive presence or voice projection, you are about to be disappointed.

As the excellent Leadership Freak tells us, speaking like a leader is actually more about NOT speaking. Here are his tips:

  • Only open your mouth to make things better
  • Be more excited to listen than to speak
  • Don’t express all your feelings
  • Test your knowledge

 

What does this mean for leadership?

We are sometimes stuck with a view of leadership that comes from the ‘great man’ era.  Oratory was crucial back then but things have changed.

To draw on a dog-eared but useful saying: ‘you have two ears, two eyes and one mouth and you should use them in that proportion’.
