The news this week of the death of Clayton ‘Clay’ Christensen, author, business consultant and, by all accounts, really nice bloke. By his own measure (how many individuals you have helped become better people) he lived a successful life.
The many eulogies paint a picture of a brilliant and much-loved man. Another theme jumps out and that is that he didn’t teach people what to think, he taught people how to think. What better way to leave a legacy?
What does this mean for leadership?
This idea is truly at the heart of leadership. We often praise people for their leadership when they know things, tell things, have the answers.
But Clay Christensen reminded us that leadership is not about being great, it’s about helping others to think differently so they can live better lives.
