When critical challenges hit the world stage, you sincerely hope that it will flush out the brightest and bravest thinking to solve it. Whilst the rescue of the Wild Boars football team from the depths of a Thai cave demonstrated incredible international teamwork and best-of-breed expertise, not all ideas were as welcome as others.
Elon Musk’s offer of a five-foot-six metal submarine was deemed impractical. “It wouldn’t have made the first fifty metres into the cave” offered British rescue diver, Vern Unsworth. Musk retorted with petulance and offensiveness.
What does this mean for leadership?
The capacity to solve difficult issues often lies within us. It takes bravery and confidence to say ‘no thanks’ to powerful, external forces and have faith in yourself…even if they try to scupper you in return.
