The challenge

Novartis is a purpose-driven organisation on a mission to reimagine medicine to improve and extend people's lives. The leadership development approach in Novartis was based on the belief that we can only re-imagine medicine if leaders “re-imagine” themselves, and self aware leaders that are in deep, continuous growth drive a positive culture and ultimately superior business results. The Leadership Development Team wanted to create a progressive solution to enable the desired leadership globally among senior leaders.

The solution

In true partnership, LIW and Novartis created a ten-month immersive journey, with a blend of face-to-face and virtual experiences. Participants focused on learning and experimenting in role and were supported with coaching, learning sprints, and regular group connects. To serve as a catalyst for change, a high-definition simulation was created, supported by actors as part of the initial immersion. When Covid hit, the partnership innovated to create a highly engaging learning experience, "IGNITE FM," which ensured NPS scores remained extremely high despite the all-virtual environment. In addition, to stretch development and the connection to purpose, an immersion focused on doing real work with medical practitioners and patients took place.

The Impact

Outcomes were measured through post-immersion ratings, personal impact statements and the results of each participant's business challenge.  Program evaluations were extremely strong, with reports of immediate application and impact, even between Ignite FM episodes.
